TikTok Ban Deadline Extended by Trump
On Thursday, President Donald Trump announced the extension of the TikTok ban deadline for the third time, allowing the app to operate in the United States for an additional 90 days.
He made this announcement via an executive order on his True Social account around noon. The new date for the ban, which is based on legislation signed by former President Joe Biden, is now set for September 19, 2025.
The app is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, and a law signed by Biden in April 2024 allowed for a nine-month period for TikTok to sell its shares in the U.S. or face a ban. Trump initially imposed a 75-day suspension upon taking office, followed by another extension in April, which was due to expire on Thursday, thus making the deals available again.
Speaking to reporters on Air Force One earlier this week, Trump indicated he would likely extend the deadline further, mentioning that sales could go through, but noted that they required approval from China.
“We probably need to get China’s approval, but we think we’ll get it. I think President Xi will eventually approve it,” he stated.
Future Plans for TikTok
Trump, in remarks made back in February, shared some ideas regarding TikTok’s future if the sales materialize.
“I’m going to do something probably not with TikTok. If we do the right deal, we do it. Otherwise, we won’t. But I have the right to do that, and we can place it in a sovereign wealth fund. There are many options, and we can definitely use it as an example for the fund,” he elaborated.
Additionally, Trump mentioned earlier this year during the Stargate project announcement that Oracle CTO Larry Ellison was interested in possibly acquiring the company.
“I think this is what it is. I met with a significant owner of TikTok. If you don’t obtain permission, it’s not worth anything… everything is worthless,” he remarked.
“So what I’m telling someone is, ‘Buy it and give the United States half. We’ll give you permission,’” Trump added, suggesting it would create a beneficial partnership with the U.S.
