Trump Promises Texas Farmers Will Not Be Wronged, Imposes Tariff on Mexico for Unfulfilled Water Agreement

Trump Accuses Mexico of Water Theft, Announces Tariff

President Trump has recently accused Mexico of “stealing America’s water” and declared a 5% tariff on Mexican imports. This decision follows Mexico’s failure to adhere to its commitments under the 1944 U.S.-Mexico Water Treaty, which, as it stands, has resulted in the U.S. being deprived of over 800,000 cubic acre-feet of water during the last five years.

Trump noted that Mexico has only met less than 30% of its obligations under the treaty, emphasizing that the U.S. is requiring Mexico to release 200,000 acre-feet of water by the end of the year. “It’s unfair to our farmers, who are in dire need of this water,” he said in a post.

He expressed frustration over the lack of response from Mexico, stating, “This violation is causing major harm to crops and livestock in Texas.” To address this, Trump mentioned the implementation of the tariff if the water is not released promptly.

Following Trump’s inauguration, U.S. Representative Monica de la Cruz, who represents the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas, had emphasized the critical nature of the water issue for her district. In previous statements, she praised the administration’s steps to enforce compliance with the treaty and highlighted the unfairness of sending U.S. water to Mexican farmers while American farmers in Texas suffer.

Rep. Tony Gonzalez also spoke on the topic, calling water scarcity a serious threat to jobs in the region, tied to the farming industry.

Trump wrapped up his statement stressing the urgency of the matter, reiterating the significance of swift action from Mexico to avoid further suffering among U.S. farmers. “Thank you for paying attention to this vital issue!” he concluded.
