President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday night from the Oval Office that the U.S. will take aggressive action against drug smugglers attempting to cross into the country from land. This declaration follows a series of strikes on cartel vessels at sea, which have recently escalated.
While being questioned about deploying military action to tackle drug smuggling in the Caribbean and Pacific, Trump acknowledged the violence involved. He argued, “Every boat that goes down saves 25,000 American lives.”
He expressed confidence in the U.S. military’s capabilities, noting the effectiveness of each operation. “Every time I see it happen, I remind myself that we’re saving 25,000 lives,” he said. This line of thinking, while perhaps a bit stark, appears to underline his commitment to the issue.
In his remarks, Trump mentioned that fewer boats would mean reduced land landings by cartels in the future. He indicated that land operations may also be forthcoming, asserting he possesses the legal authority to act against drug smugglers on U.S. soil. “Yes, I do,” he replied when asked about his authority.
Trump suggested that if necessary, he might consult Congress regarding land operations, although he emphasized there was currently no need for that. “This is a national security issue,” he insisted, highlighting that drug-related deaths reached 300,000 Americans last year, which he believes grants him the necessary legal framework to pursue such actions.
Trump vowed to respond decisively if smugglers approach via land, claiming they have yet to face the full extent of U.S. military preparedness. He even hinted at the possibility of further actions, raising questions about the future of his administration’s approach to drug trafficking.
Secretary of the Army Pete Hegseth revealed Wednesday that, following Trump’s directive, the military recently executed an attack against “narco-terrorists” in the Eastern Pacific. This marks the eighth such operation in recent weeks, though the broader implications of this campaign remain to be seen.
