President Donald Trump and his administration have initiated a strong push against Illinois lawmakers who declined to send National Guard troops to Chicago following a violent Labor Day weekend in the city.
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and other officials have made it clear that they do not want National Guard troops in Chicago. Yet, Trump’s administration seems to believe that Pritzker is eager for their presence amid a crackdown on Trump’s legal troubles in Washington.
“Over the weekend, at least 54 people were shot, and eight lost their lives in Chicago… Pritzker’s situation appears desperate. We’ll address the crime quickly, just as we did in DC. Chicago will be safe again,” Trump remarked.
The White House criticizes Pritzker, escalating tensions over crime in the city: “Decay is an option”
In a post on social media Tuesday morning, Trump called Chicago the “Murder Capital.” He amplified his sentiments in the Oval Office, comparing crime rates in Chicago to those in Afghanistan, stating that the brutality in Chicago is unparalleled. He mentioned that despite Pritzker’s objections, he intends to send National Guard troops to the city.
Trump commented, “If the governor of Illinois reaches out to me, I’d be more than willing to assist. But we’re going to proceed anyway. It’s our duty to protect this country.”
Other members of the administration have also spotlighted the violence that plagued Chicago over Labor Day. For instance, JD Vance referenced Pritzker’s claim that Trump is “manufacturing a crisis,” while juxtaposing it with Chicago’s crime statistics from the holiday weekend.
White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson expressed her hope that Democrats would feel more pressure from their constituents than accept Trump’s proposal.
Pritzker labels Trump’s threat to send the National Guard as an “overreaction”
In response, Pritzker’s office did not provide immediate comments, but the governor has consistently opposed the idea of deploying National Guard troops to Chicago following Trump’s posts. He stated, “It’s a lovely day here. There’s no emergency, so Donald Trump should understand that military intervention is unnecessary in Chicago.”
Meanwhile, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson asserted in August that crime has actually decreased in the city. He noted reductions exceeding 30% in murders, 35% in robberies, and nearly 40% in shootings over the past year.
However, the White House references reports indicating that Chicago has experienced the highest murder rates among American cities over the last 13 years. Interestingly, FBI data from 2024 reveals that while Chicago had the highest per capita murders, it doesn’t appear in the list of the top five cities for those rates.
Pritzker has previously criticized Trump’s move as “unconstitutional” and contrary to American values.
Governor Pritzker argues that Trump is attempting to create a crisis through the National Guard deployment
The National Guard is typically overseen by state governments for both state and federal operations, including natural disasters. The federal government manages the National Guard in the District of Columbia.
Earlier in June, Trump sent California State Guard troops to Los Angeles amid immigrant-related riots, an action that stirred controversy as it skirted the authority of Governor Gavin Newsom. Newsom subsequently filed a lawsuit against Trump, claiming the federal intervention was unlawful. A federal judge ruled against Trump’s decision to deploy troops to Los Angeles as violating federal law.
