Trump proposes a full tariff on international movies.

President Trump has proposed imposing 100% tariffs on foreign films, arguing that “cooperative efforts” from other nations that lure away filmmakers pose a risk to national security.

According to Trump, “The American film industry is rapidly declining. Other countries provide numerous incentives that draw filmmakers and studios away from the US. Hollywood, along with several other regions, is suffering significantly.” This statement was part of a post he made on a Sunday regarding the True Society.

“This is a coordinated initiative from other nations, making it a national security threat. It’s not just a message; it promotes and goes beyond that. Thus, I will authorize the Department of Commerce and the US Trade Representative to start the process of enacting a 100% tariff on all films produced both domestically and abroad,” he stated.

Details on how these tariffs would affect intellectual property remain unclear, but it is likely that the entertainment industry will challenge the action legally, particularly around issues of free speech.

The Hill reached out to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Film Society for their reactions.

The introduction of such tariffs is expected to disrupt global markets, and Trump, during a period of negative economic growth, has historically had a tumultuous relationship with the entertainment sector.

Prior to taking office in January, he appointed actors Mel Gibson, John Voight, and Sylvester Stallone as “special ambassadors” for the industry, expressing that “these extraordinarily talented individuals will serve as my eyes and ears. I will follow their advice. It will usher in a golden age for Hollywood, just like the United States!”
