Trump Advocates for Renaming American Football
President Donald Trump has proposed that American football be renamed, claiming it would allow for soccer—known as football in many parts of the world—to adopt the name instead. This comment arose during a conversation about the increasing popularity of soccer in the U.S. at the World Cup draw in Washington, D.C., on Friday.
“Look at what’s happening with U.S. football. It’s U.S. soccer again. We don’t quite seem to call it that because it gets confusing with this other sport called football, but really, should we not call it what it is? This is football, no doubt about it. We ought to find another name for that NFL thing,” Trump stated.
He further remarked, “It just doesn’t make sense when you think about it.”
On the same day, Trump received the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize during the draw ceremony. FIFA President Gianni Infantino awarded him with several honors, including a trophy depicting a golden hand holding a soccer ball, along with a medal that Trump promptly donned.
The award certificate emphasized that the FIFA Peace Prize is given annually to someone exemplifying significant leadership and commitment to fostering peace and unity for soccer fans worldwide.
Trump’s Vision for the World Cup
Earlier this year, President Trump signed an executive order aimed at overseeing a soccer tournament hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. He will lead the organizing task force, with Vice President J.D. Vance as his deputy. Rudy Giuliani’s son has been assigned as the executive director to manage daily operations.
Out of the 16 selected host cities, 11 are located in the United States.
Previously, Trump had warned he might relocate games if certain cities were considered unsafe. Yet upon his arrival at the Kennedy Center, he expressed renewed confidence in the safety of those locations and promised federal assistance if required.
The championship match is slated for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. This international tournament, set to kick off in June 2026, will be the first World Cup in over 20 years to be co-hosted by multiple countries.
