Trump Provides House Republicans with Strategy for Midterms

Trump Urges Republicans to Focus on Healthcare for 2026 Elections

During a recent gathering of House Republicans, former President Donald Trump emphasized that healthcare should be their primary focus as they gear up for the 2026 midterm elections. “It’s never been our issue,” he noted at the GOP Issues Conference held in Washington, D.C. “But it should be our issue.”

Trump suggested, “Let’s figure it out. Let the money go directly to the people. It goes in a healthcare account.” He insisted that funds shouldn’t be directed toward insurance companies, advocating for various potential strategies.

This discussion came shortly after the expiration of Obamacare subsidies, which had been extended under the Biden administration and the Democratic-led Congress, leaving around 22 million Americans facing higher premium costs this year.

Conservative leaders have urged Congress not to extend these subsidies, arguing that they disproportionately benefit wealthier households and support controversial healthcare initiatives. Some Republicans contend that the policy essentially acts as a subsidy for insurance companies.

A recent poll indicated that nearly 60% of Americans expressed significant concern over increasing healthcare costs for 2026.

One proposed Republican measure aims to replace the expired subsidies with health savings accounts, positing that this would provide funds directly to patients instead of insurers.

Trump reminded the audience of the political stakes involved, stating, “These issues are so important because you guys gotta get elected.” He warned that failure to address healthcare could result in negative outcomes for Republicans in the upcoming elections. “If you don’t get elected, we have a country that’s going to go to hell. So we can’t play games,” he cautioned.

He also addressed his concerns about potential impeachment if Republicans do not succeed. “You got to win the midterms, because if we don’t win the midterms, it’s just gonna be… they’ll find a reason to impeach me,” Trump stated.

Additionally, Trump mentioned that energy issues also deserve attention from the Republican Party. “Your energy prices have come so far down,” he remarked, highlighting another area of focus for the upcoming campaigns.
