Trump Withdraws Ed Martin’s Nomination for US Attorney in D.C.
President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he has rescinded the nomination of Ed Martin for the position of U.S. Attorney in Washington, D.C.
Republican Senator Tom Tillis from North Carolina stated that he would not support Martin due to his past comments regarding those arrested during the January 6 Capitol riots. While Martin serves as a prosecutor for the District of Columbia, he requires Senate approval for his nomination to proceed.
Tillis remarked, “It’s a debate whether it’s 30 days or three years, but I’m not tolerant of anyone entering the building on January 6th.”
During a press conference, Trump expressed his disappointment, saying, “He had no support… I can lift that little phone number multiple times a day.”
Tillis explained that his opposition to Martin stemmed from how he defended those involved in the January 6th events, noting, “I met Mr. Martin, he seems like a good guy.” He elaborated that his main concerns originate from January 6th, mentioning some prosecutions that might have been hasty decisions, but emphasized that anyone who broke the law on that day should face consequences.
Tillis added that his support might differ if Martin was nominated for a U.S. lawyer position in a different district, explaining that the context of Martin’s nomination significantly matters.
Critics of Tillis argue that allowing Democrats to fill this position could hinder Trump’s agenda. Christopher Bedford, a senior political editor, indicated that if Democrats succeed in this instance, it could lead to more obstacles in the President’s plans, especially concerning tax and border negotiations.
Trump stated that he would nominate another candidate for the role within the next two days, expressing hope that the new candidate would possess suitable qualifications.
