Trump push lower prices and taxes falls flat with Dems in focus group

Democrats from Fox News Digital Focus Group were barely impressed by President Donald Trump's call to lower egg prices and the call to eliminate tips and overtime pay taxes.

In a Congress speech Tuesday, Trump denounced former President Biden for “out of control” egg prices and promised that his administration was working hard to reduce costs.

“Secretary [Brooke Rollins]do a good job on that. You inherited complete confusion from the previous administration. Do a good job,” Trump said as the democratic side of the room broke out in booing.

According to the latest consumer price index, the average price of a dozen Grade A large eggs reached a new record in January 2025. Cities across the US cost $4.95, 13 cents more than their previous record $4.82.

“The main focus of our fight to defeat inflation is to rapidly reduce energy costs. Previous managers have reduced the number of new oil and gas leases by 95%, stopped construction of pipelines and closed more than 100 power plants.

Lee Carter, president and partner of Maslansky+ Partner, conducted a focus group of 161 people on Fox News Digital, which includes 64 Democrats, 77 Republicans and 20 independents.

According to Carter, Republicans and independents who joined the focus group were pleased that Trump had addressed Price, but wanted to hear more about his energy plan.

Still, she noted that both groups are willing to give the president the benefits of doubt.

“The Democrats didn't have that, so instead focused on how unfair it was for Trump to blame Biden for egg prices,” Carter added.

As Trump criticised Biden and pointed to efforts to cut the costs of his products, the favors of Republicans and independents rose steadily, but Democrats' responses went from neutral to slightly negative.

The focus group responded similarly when Trump repeated his calls to end tips, overtime jobs and Social Security benefits taxes.

Again, this part of the speech has led to the rise in favor of Republicans and independents. But even though the Democrats began to be neutral, they showed slight favors as Trump sought great benefits from America's “great seniors.”

The Responsible Federal Budget Committee estimates that it could add $100-$200 billion to the country's deficit over the decade's window, similar to the two policies Trump supports: the increase in the minimum wage.

Overall, Carter pointed out that Democrats barely responded to Trump's speech and didn't dial negatively to the lowest level, as Fox News Digital Focus Group normally sees.

“They were just neutral. They didn't seem to want to listen to him at all. Independents acted more like Republicans than Democrats,” Carter continued.
