Trump pushes back deadline for Iran strikes, stating U.S. will delay all military actions on power plants after talks.

Diplomatic Developments Between the U.S. and Iran

On Monday, President Donald Trump announced a five-day extension for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. He mentioned that “productive” high-level negotiations are taking place with an Iranian official in an effort to resolve the ongoing conflict that has been developing over the last month.

In response, Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Baqher Ghalibaf denied Trump’s claims about the negotiations, asserting that no discussions have occurred with the United States. He suggested that Trump was using misinformation to affect financial and oil markets while trying to evade difficulties faced by the U.S. and Israel. Ghalibaf emphasized that Iranian officials stand united behind their leadership until justice is served.

Trump also indicated a postponement of military actions against Iran’s energy infrastructure, citing the positive conversations that have taken place. This extension replaces a previous 48-hour ultimatum that warned of potential severe measures if the strait was not reopened by Monday evening. Trump’s decisions appear dependent on the outcomes of ongoing meetings led by U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

The situation presents a notable gap in narratives, with the White House asserting progress in discussions while Iranian officials continue to reject any claims of negotiations. Trump expressed a surprisingly optimistic view of these conversations during a press briefing before boarding Air Force One, indicating that significant agreements were nearly in place.

Although the president did not specify with whom the discussions occurred, he noted that the U.S. had not yet communicated directly with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, leading to speculation about Khamenei’s status.

In Tehran, state media dismissed Trump’s remarks as “fake news,” alleging attempts to sway oil prices.

Conditions for the Five-Day Pause

  • Reopening the Strait: Iran must immediately cease interfering with international shipping.
  • Materials: Any final agreement should include the U.S. gaining control of Iran’s enriched uranium.
  • Security: A permanent halt to Iran’s missile development and financing of proxy forces is required.

The announcement had immediate effects on global markets, with oil prices falling as investors anticipated a resolution through diplomacy. Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi noted that Turkey and Egypt are acting as intermediaries for ongoing U.S. discussions, stating that clear messages have been conveyed to Tehran in hopes of reducing tensions.

Despite these diplomatic efforts, military readiness remains high. The Pentagon has clarified that while strikes against Iranian power plants are on hold, broader military operations against other targets remain active. Meanwhile, Iranian forces have reportedly deployed limpet mines in the Strait of Hormuz, which may complicate any political resolutions and pose challenges to maritime security.
