Trump Condemns Vandalism at WWII Memorial
On Friday, President Donald Trump expressed his outrage over the vandalism at the World War II memorial located on the National Mall, branding it a severe disrespect to the American heroes who sacrificed their lives during the conflict.
Trump made his remarks on Truth Social the day before, just before the announcement that Melissa L. Farris was identified as the suspect accused of spray-painting the monument.
“Our beautiful World War II memorial has just been attacked by spray-painting vandals. There is no greater insult to America’s fallen heroes of World War II. First it was the reflecting pool, and now this,” he conveyed. “We are following in their footsteps. Where did these animals come from??”
The perpetrator, as reported by freelance photographer Andrew Leyden, spray-painted the phrase “Clean Hands Dirty Dollars” on the memorial. Leyden also noted that someone had poured foam into the fountain of the monument.
U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro, announced on Friday morning that charges were being filed against Farris.
“Tearing down World War II monuments is a despicable attack on sacred monuments that honor Americans who died fighting for our freedoms, including my father and grandfather,” Pirro shared on social media. She further mentioned, “This morning, we filed two felonies in U.S. District Court against Melissa L. Farris, including plunder of U.S. property and destruction of veterans’ monuments, which carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. She is currently in custody.”
The vandalism took place during a beautification campaign led by President Trump in the capital. His administration had overseen the renovation of 22 fountains throughout Washington, D.C., including those in Meridian Hill Park, all of which are now operational.
Additionally, Trump initiated a project to cover the bottom of the reflecting pool with a blue sealant, claiming that complications noticed after its completion were largely due to vandalism. He mentioned, “A highly credible witness, a career National Park Service employee, witnessed David Hahn (Act Blue) destroy the reflecting pool in broad daylight by ‘violently’ tearing and pulling at its somewhat delicate coating.”
He indicated that there was additional damage to the pool but lamented the lack of video evidence to back up those claims. “There was significant other damage to the reflecting pool, but unfortunately there is no video or evidence other than the damage itself. We are working to repair the pool and expect it to reopen soon,” he noted. Trump did acknowledge some contractor errors during the expedited preparations for the July 4th opening, stating it was a minor issue in the grand scheme of the overall project.
