Trump Discusses Security Measures After Shooting Incident
Following a shooting incident, President Donald Trump joked about the prospect of wearing a bulletproof vest, saying it would make him look “20 pounds heavier.” Despite the humor, he acknowledged the need for protection and insisted he wasn’t preoccupied with potential future threats.
In a conversation with reporters in the Oval Office, Trump responded to questions regarding his security, particularly whether he would consider bulletproof attire after recent threats directed at him. “I don’t know if I can handle looking 20 pounds heavier,” he quipped, noting the physicality of some individuals. “Well, if you want to gain 20 or 25 pounds,” he added with a laugh.
He then shifted the conversation to the Secret Service officer who lost his life after an armed man breached security at the White House Correspondents Association dinner held in Washington, D.C.
Trump remarked on the effectiveness of the vest that protected the officer, stating, “Frankly, this vest did a great job catching bullets up close.” He mentioned that while the officer was in distress, he initially resisted going to the hospital. “The vest protected him completely,” Trump continued, illustrating the intensity of the situation by comparing it to being “hit by Mike Tyson.”
Although Trump has been approached about bulletproof vests, he expressed reluctance, suggesting it would make him vulnerable to “bad elements.”
When asked about any concerns regarding another assassination attempt, he downplayed the worry. “I’m not thinking about that,” he said, adding that if he were, it might impact his effectiveness in office. “I wouldn’t really be thinking about it. If I was, I wouldn’t be as effective,” he reiterated.
Security matters have come under sharp scrutiny, particularly after numerous assassination attempts he has faced in recent years. A recent incident involved a suspect attempting to rush toward him during an event in Washington, D.C., where Secret Service agents successfully intervened.
