Trump said in an interview on Wednesday. Fox NewsSpeaking on “Fox & Friends,” he said he couldn’t believe that Tim Walz (D-Minn.) had been picked as Harris’ running mate.

“My reaction was disbelief. I never thought I’d be selected,” Trump said.

“He’s a very liberal guy and an amazing choice,” the former president added. “I couldn’t be more excited.”

He went on to say that he believes Walz is a “smarter version” of Harris and “on par with Bernie Sanders.”

Trump also said Walz was weak on immigration and “very passionate about transgender issues.”

The comments came shortly after Governor Walz signed a bill legalizing gender reassignment surgery in Minnesota.

Governor Walz has come under criticism from some Republicans for being slow to activate the National Guard to quell riots in Minnesota after the death of George Floyd in 2020.

“He’s very pro-transgender and he thinks anything transgender is great, but from a national standpoint he hasn’t changed anything,” Trump said.

Trump also said Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-Pennsylvania) would have been a better choice.

“I’m not a big fan of Josh Shapiro, I know the state well, but I would say he would have been a better choice,” the former president said.

On Tuesday, Harris announced that she would nominate Walz as her running mate, after much speculation about who she would choose from among the Democratic field of candidates.
