House Speaker Mike Johnson’s motion to resign was blocked.
The bill was blocked by a vote of 359-43. Democrats joined with Republicans.
On May 8, the House overwhelmingly blocked a bill proposed by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) that would strip House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) of the gavel.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) met twice this week with the speaker to discuss her grievances and demands before forcing a vote on her motion to leave.
House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-Louisiana) then proposed a measure to move Greene to resign. Democrats joined Republicans in approving the hold on a 359-43 vote. Eleven Republicans voted to move forward with the expulsion attempt.
House Democratic leaders previously said they would protect Johnson if there was a vote to expel Greene, citing her help in passing a $95 billion foreign aid bill for Ukraine, Israel and the Indo-Pacific region. He promised to cooperate.
Donald Trump responded to the motion by praising Marjorie Taylor Greene but saying now is not the time.
“But now the Republicans have to fight the radical left Democrats and all the damage they’ve done to our country,” Trump said.
Trump also praised Johnson, but acknowledged: “There are some things I would have liked to see accomplished in the last two months, but we will get it done together.”
I love Marjorie Taylor Greene. She has spirit and she has fight. And I believe she will be with us and by our side for a long time to come. But now the Republicans have to fight the radical left Democrats and all the damage they have done to our country. We are not in a position to vote on the resignation motion as the majority is 1 and will soon increase to 3 or 4. Maybe someday, but now is not the time. We have a huge lead in presidential polls across the country and in swing states. Similarly, we have done well in the Senate and I believe we will do well in the House. However, if you show the DISUNITY depicted as CHAOS, it will have a negative impact on everything! Mike Johnson is a good guy who tries very hard. I also think he wanted the last one to complete some things over the course of two months, but we will complete it together. We ask all Republicans to vote for the “Motion to the Table.” We win big – and it’s coming soon!
