President Trump Honors Lifeguard for Heroic Rescue

On August 17, 2026, President Donald Trump welcomed 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams to the Oval Office to recognize his bravery in rescuing a 10-year-old boy in Santa Cruz, California.

In a meeting at the White House, President Trump spoke with Williams, who is also a lifeguard in Santa Cruz, as well as Nathanial Rai, the boy he saved from turbulent waters on July 25 at Sea Bright Beach.

The remarkable rescue quickly went viral and even captured the attention of Eric Trump, the president’s son, who suggested that Williams should receive the “highest civilian honor.” Following this, the president reportedly invited both Williams and Nathanial to the Oval Office to commend their courageous actions.

At the White House meeting, Sumit Rai, Nathanial’s father, expressed profound gratitude to Williams for his quick thinking and life-saving efforts.

Williams shared, “In moments of danger, we always rely on training. All I was thinking about was how to get the boy out of the water as quickly as possible.”

President Trump praised Williams during the meeting, stating, “He’s a real hero. That’s amazing. And he’s also a really lucky guy. God was looking at you, right?” He further emphasized that Williams’ actions could inspire young people across America, noting, “Maybe lifeguards don’t get the recognition they deserve.”

Reflecting on the tense moments before the rescue, Williams credited his extensive lifeguard training. He also mentioned his future aspirations of enrolling in paramedic school, hoping to eventually become a firefighter.

President Trump quipped, “We will make recommendations,” suggesting that Williams’ heroism should be acknowledged further.

The rescue was notably intense; footage showed Williams gripping Lai while battling against large waves. Another lifeguard, Aaron Boonen, assisted in bringing the unconscious boy to safety.

Williams also cautioned bystanders from entering the water during the crisis, emphasizing the potential danger.

Summarizing the situation post-rescue, Nathanial Rai shared, “I thought I was going to die” before Williams intervened. Sumit Rai acknowledged the tremendous risk Williams took, stating it wasn’t just a mental challenge but also an incredible physical accomplishment. “He did everything he had to do to save his life and risked his life to do so. I am forever grateful to him,” he expressed.
