Trump Reduces $400 Million Due to Harassment of Jewish Students; Columbia University Dismisses 180 Employees

Columbia University Cuts Staff Amid Funding Suspension

Columbia University has made the tough decision to lay off 180 staff members who were involved in federal grants. This comes after the Trump administration revoked a significant $400 million in federal funding to the institution.

Despite the university’s attempts to comply with various demands—including measures like banning masks during protests and enhancing security—the funds remain on hold. This situation poses a threat to crucial staff roles.

“It was a difficult choice, but nearly 180 of our colleagues, working partially or fully on federal grants, will be receiving notifications of non-renewal or termination,” said the interim president along with other administrators, noting that financial pressures are “severe.”

Columbia is actively seeking to persuade the government to reinstate the funding, although specific details about which departments will face job losses or face cuts to support were not disclosed. The funding reduction impacts a larger $5 billion grant that Columbia had hoped to secure, much of which is directed towards healthcare and scientific research.

According to reports from Reuters, back in March, the Trump administration canceled its $400 million grant and contract with Columbia, citing concerns over what they termed anti-Semitic harassment on the university’s New York City campus.

Columbia found itself at the center of protests related to Palestine and anti-Israel sentiments that occupied much of last year, especially during the escalation of conflict in Gaza.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration informed Harvard University that it would not receive future funding until it complies with requests related to campus anti-Semitism and other matters. Harvard is currently suing to challenge the administration’s decision to withhold billions in federal support, arguing that such demands infringe upon academic independence.

In the face of requests from the Trump administration, Columbia has made various concessions. The university has promised to change its disciplinary processes, increase security presence, and appoint officials with the authority to oversee courses related to the Middle East.
