Cuba Talks? Trump Suggests Engagement Amid Sanctions
President Donald Trump has hinted at the possibility of discussions with Cuba, describing the nation as a “failed country.”
“No Republican has ever spoken to me about Cuba, which is a failed country and only heading in one direction — down!” he stated on Truth Social recently.
“Cuba is asking for help, and we are going to talk!!!” he added.
This comes on the heels of new sanctions imposed on the island last week, stemming from an executive order Trump signed on May 1st.
The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) clarified that this order expands sanctions against Cuba, allowing the treasury and state secretaries to target foreign entities linked to Cuba that pose threats to U.S. interests.
According to OFAC, the State Department designated the Grupo de Administración Empresarial S.A. (GAESA), a Cuban organization, as part of this action on Thursday.
On the same day, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is of Cuban descent, backed the sanctions. He explained that they signal the Trump Administration’s unwillingness to tolerate the threats posed by Cuba’s communist regime to U.S. national security.
“Today’s sanctions demonstrate that the Trump Administration will not stand by while Cuba’s communist regime threatens our national security in our hemisphere. We will continue to take action until the regime takes all necessary political and economic reforms,” Rubio remarked.
In response, U.S. Representative Carlos Giménez (R-Fla.), the only current Congress member born in Cuba, expressed his support for Rubio’s statements.
“As the only Member of Congress born in Cuba, I am personally forever grateful for your commitment to freedom & democracy,” he said, emphasizing community pride in Rubio’s decisions.
Giménez concluded, “You know our community is so proud of you & supports your decisions 150%. Cuba is next!”
