Trump Reflects on 2016 Campaign and Calls for Religious Renewal
In a recent appearance, President Donald Trump recounted a conversation from the 2016 Republican primary involving Dr. Ben Carson. Trump recalled that Carson predicted he would win the election because, as Carson believed, God intended for that outcome.
“He was quite a tough opponent,” Trump noted, reminiscing about the primary battles. “And I remember Ben coming up to me right after some early discussions. He said, ‘You know you’re going to win, right?'”
During his speech at the White House Religious Freedom Committee meeting, held at the Bible Museum in Washington, D.C., Trump reflected, “I said, ‘I’m not so sure about that. I think I have a chance, but you never know.’ There were a lot of seasoned candidates in the race, including governors and senators.”
With a hint of humor, Trump mentioned that he sometimes wondered when Carson would end his campaign, particularly after Carson had strong early showings but ultimately dropped out after failing to secure votes on Super Tuesday in 2016. Following that, he endorsed Trump and later served as the Secretary of HUD during Trump’s administration.
“He was tough,” Trump said affectionately. “But we have a special bond with Ben.”
In addition, Trump emphasized the need to bring religious values back to America. “America was built on faith; I’ve been saying this for a long time. When faith falters, our nation tends to struggle,” he stated. He also reaffirmed his commitment to uphold rights under God during his administration.
“We need to restore our national identity as one nation under God. That’s essential,” he urged the audience.
Trump highlighted the mission of the Religious Freedom Committee, which aims to protect Americans’ rights to practice their religion freely, especially in public spaces. The group was established earlier this year as part of initiatives through the new White House Faith Office.
In a broader commentary, Trump reiterated a call for Americans to strengthen their spiritual dedication as the country approaches its 250th anniversary.
