President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly considering privatizing the United States Postal Service (USPS), three people familiar with the matter told The Washington Post in a report published Sunday.
President Trump made clear his desire to separate the USPS from the federal government during a conversation at his Mar-a-Lago residence, officials said. ExitThat includes Howard Lutnick, who is nominated to be Secretary of Commerce and co-chair of the President's transition team.

A person familiar with the matter told the outlet that in early December, President Trump met with a group of transition team officials to hear their opinions on privatizing government agencies.
The Postal Service's reduced mail volume reportedly caused the agency to lose $9.5 billion in the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, The Washington Post reported.
The media cited Amazon as raising concerns about the potential impact of postal privatization on e-commerce, and the company's executive chairman Jeff Bezos will donate $1 million to President Trump's inaugural fund. It is reported that this is planned. Jeff Bezos owns the Washington Post. (Related: Big tech companies follow Zuckerberg's lead and donate $1 million to President Trump's inaugural fund)
As the Christmas season approaches for mailing cards and packages, the USPS, which many see as inefficient, is a potential target for the president-elect's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). DOGE co-leaders Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy have not yet publicly called for privatizing the agency, which is in line with their mission.
The Washington Post reports that DOGE committee members “held preliminary discussions about major changes to the Postal Service.”
The paper noted that privatizing the USPS is a “prominent goal” to reduce federal costs as Republican lawmakers and Trump allies plan major reforms.
Republican Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, the incoming chair of the DOGE subcommittee, said Friday on the X show that wasteful spending at the USPS “has to stop.”
