US Envoys Visit Kyiv Following Kremlin Talks
US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff arrived in Kyiv on Sunday, marking their first trip to the Ukrainian capital. This visit followed discussions with Russia’s Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin aimed at addressing the ongoing conflict that has lasted over four years.
Witkoff, a business associate of US President Donald Trump, and Kushner, who is Trump’s son-in-law, have traveled to Moscow multiple times but have not engaged in talks in Kyiv, which has faced severe Russian attacks since 2022.
Upon their arrival, they were seen taking a train to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The envoys are seeking to reinitiate negotiations to resolve what has become Europe’s most severe conflict since World War II, especially after a summer filled with escalated tensions.
The Russian invasion has resulted in significant loss of life and displacement of millions within Ukraine.
A White House representative stated that Kushner and Witkoff had met with Putin on Saturday to contribute to “President Trump’s agenda of peace in the Russia-Ukraine War.” They discussed potential plans for future steps that will be revealed in the upcoming weeks and expressed optimism for their meetings in Ukraine.
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov described the discussions as “extremely frank,” noting that the Americans suggested several ideas for a potential resolution, although he didn’t provide specifics. Ushakov mentioned that Russia feels “confident” in achieving its military objectives in eastern Ukraine.
In a bid to foster dialogue, both nations agreed not to target each other’s capitals for three days.
This trip marks the eighth time Kushner and Witkoff have visited Moscow during the conflict, yet it is their inaugural visit to Kyiv, a city that has endured continuous bombardment.
As they reached Rzeszow in Poland before heading to Kyiv, Zelensky expressed Ukraine’s readiness for discussions. In a social media post, he reassured that Ukraine remains committed to constructive dialogue.
Since the war began in February 2022, Ukraine has closed its airspace, leading to international leaders arriving via train.
However, many Ukrainians remain skeptical about significant progress. Yaroslav, a 29-year-old resident of Kyiv, conveyed a bleak outlook, stating, “At this point, it doesn’t give me any hope. There have already been too many negotiations.”
Putin, in a televised address ahead of the talks, assured that Russia would ensure the safety of the envoys in Kyiv, despite the ongoing conflicts. He stressed the importance of such contacts, regardless of the outcomes.
Trump indicated on Friday that his envoys were bringing a “proposal” for peace but didn’t provide further details. So far, US diplomatic efforts have not sparked any breakthroughs, partially due to tensions related to Washington’s own issues with Iran.
Russian forces have taken control of significant areas in eastern and southern Ukraine, and Putin has reiterated his goal of advancing further into eastern territories.
While Moscow and Kyiv took steps to halt strikes during negotiations, fighting persisted in other regions. Ukraine’s air force reported overnight Russian assaults involving drones and missiles, while Moscow claimed to have intercepted a large number of these attacks.
Although Putin noted a decrease in Ukrainian strikes against Russia, Kyiv reported casualties from Russian attacks, including fatalities among civilians.
