Trump requests assessment of Smithsonian museums following his 'woke' criticism.

Trump Calls for Review of Smithsonian Exhibits

On Tuesday, former President Donald Trump intensified his criticism of American museums, particularly targeting the Smithsonian Institution. He has initiated a sweeping review of major museums across the U.S., describing them as “the last segment of awakening.” This initiative was outlined in a letter sent to Smithsonian Secretary Ronnie Bunch on August 12.

Trump’s statement has condemned the Smithsonian and similar institutions for portraying narratives that he believes undermine America’s story rather than celebrate its successes. He expressed frustration, claiming that these museums focus too much on negative aspects rather than showcasing achievements and a hopeful future.

“It’s a museum in Washington, but, honestly, museums throughout the country are essentially the last remaining segment of ‘wake,'” Trump commented. He added, “This country is vibrant, and we want museums to reflect that.” He believes it’s time for a cultural shift that recognizes American pride.

Concerns About Displaying American History

Trump asserts that American history, particularly concerning inclusivity and success, isn’t sufficiently represented in the Smithsonian’s current narratives. His letter requests that museum leaders submit programming materials for exhibitions, along with internal guidelines, as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary.

“As we celebrate our nation’s founding, it’s vital that our National Museum reflects our unity, progress, and enduring values,” the letter emphasizes. This initiative aims to promote American exceptionalism while removing divisive themes that contradict the President’s vision for cultural institutions.

Currently, the review will focus on a variety of museums, including the National Museum of American History and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, as well as others within the Smithsonian network.

Previous Criticisms of Smithsonian Exhibits

This announcement follows earlier critiques by the White House regarding specific exhibitions within the Smithsonian, such as the “Entertainment Nation” exhibition that was highlighted in July. Officials have been vocal about their stance that taxpayer funds shouldn’t support entities perceived as undermining American values.

For instance, they pointed out certain displays—including circus posters from the 1920s—which were said to reflect colonialism, alongside reinterpretations of iconic characters like the Lone Ranger. These selections have raised eyebrows, as they often view American cultural icons through a controversial lens.

Aiming for Constructive Review

Despite the pointed language, the letter indicates a desire to approach the review as a constructive dialogue rather than interference with curatorial decisions. The objective is to cultivate a representation of American heritage that is uplifting and historically accurate.

The timeline for this initiative is clearly laid out: museums will need to submit necessary materials within 30 days, conduct staff interviews within 75 days, and begin implementing changes within 120 days. These modifications should aim to replace divisive rhetoric with a unified narrative.

The conclusion of the letter portrays this initiative as a collaborative effort, encouraging Smithsonian staff to engage in a curatorial vision that highlights the strengths and achievements of American culture. It’s clear that the review is intended to redefine how the Smithsonian represents American history moving forward.

As of now, neither the White House nor the Smithsonian has provided immediate comments on this new directive.
