Trump Withdraws Support for Rep. Hurd
On Saturday, President Donald Trump decided to withdraw his backing for Rep. Jeff Hurd (R-Colo.), accusing him of not supporting his tariff policies. This came after Hurd expressed views on Congress’s constitutional role in trade decisions.
In a statement, Trump remarked, “Given the insufficient support for the tremendous success of tariffs, which have enhanced America’s wealth and strength, I am withdrawing my support for Congressman Jeff Hurd, a RINO from Colorado’s 3rd District. Instead, I fully support the candidacy of respected patriot Hope Schepelman for Congress.” He made these comments on Truth Social.
This shift happened just after Hurd highlighted the Constitution’s separation of powers in light of a recent Supreme Court ruling that limited presidential authority over tariffs. Additionally, it followed Trump’s announcement to raise global tariffs from 10% to 15% on that same day.
Such a withdrawal of support is rather unusual, showcasing an evident rift between Trump and a sitting Republican.
Hurd shared on X that “the Supreme Court has clarified the scope of IEEPA, and that clarity is significant.” He continued, noting that Article I grants Congress the authority to regulate foreign commerce and impose tariffs, and emphasizing that major trade decisions should stem from clear legal authority rather than ambiguous interpretations of emergencies.
While Hurd indicated sympathy towards Trump’s broader trade objectives, he underscored that effective trade enforcement should rely on a solid legal foundation. “When tariffs are necessary, Congress should openly debate and vote on them,” he stated.
Trump expressed disappointment with Hurd, saying he is “one of the few lawmakers who has let me and our country down,” and critiqued him for focusing more on a foreign nation that has taken advantage of the U.S. over the needs of his own country.
He mentioned that garnering support is typically a challenging task. “It’s a tough call for me. I’ve managed it once before with former Congressman Mo Brooks from Alabama… but these decisions are essential for making America great again!” he reflected.
Earlier that day, Trump declared an increase in global tariffs following a 6-3 Supreme Court decision that restricted the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). He remarked on the ruling being “ridiculous” and “anti-American,” vowing to raise tariffs to a legally authorized level.
In praising Hope Schepelman, Trump described her as a “renowned critical care nurse and brave U.S. Navy veteran who understands that America First is essential,” while contrasting her with Hurd by stating, “Unlike RINO Jeff Hurd, HOPE will never let you down!”
Fox News Digital reached out for a comment from Hurd’s office but did not receive an immediate response.
