Trump Responds to Allegations of Political Retaliation
On Sunday, President Donald Trump reacted to comments made by CBS News’ Norah O’Donnell, who implied that he might be engaging in “political retribution” against his adversaries through the prosecution process.
Trump rejected O’Donnell’s insinuation regarding his alleged vengeful intentions toward indicted former FBI Director James Comey, New York Attorney General Letitia James, and former National Security Adviser John Bolton. He contended that the Justice Department’s actions against them were justified, labeling them as “crooked” and “dirty.”
“You know what? Do you know who was indicted? The man you are looking at,” Trump stated. He emphasized, “And I was innocent, and I was able to defeat all the nonsense that was thrown at me, so I’m here.” He seemed to feel strongly about the situation.
He added, “And yet when you go after a dirty cop like Comey or a guy like Bolton; I don’t know anything about it. I heard he took records everywhere. Who knows? In my opinion, James is a terribly dishonest person.”
Trump also insisted that he had not instructed the Justice Department to pursue charges against the three individuals.
“No, you don’t need to give instructions,” he said, asserting their corruption was apparent. “They were very dirty. They were so distorted. They were so corrupt that our honest people,” he remarked about those within the Justice Department, indicating that they would act on their own against such figures. “Pam Bondi is doing a great job. Kash Patel is doing a very good job.”
In a post on Truth Social, Attorney General Pam Bondi mentioned that she could not postpone the prosecution of Comey, James, or Democratic California Senator Adam Schiff.
A grand jury indicted Comey on September 25 for allegedly making false statements to Congress and obstructing a congressional inquiry. He is accused of lying during a September 2020 Senate Judiciary Committee hearing regarding whether he authorized colleagues to leak information to the media about the investigation into the Steele dossier and Hillary Clinton’s emails.
Additionally, Republican Texas Senator Ted Cruz noted that former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe claimed Comey had approved the leaking of information to the Wall Street Journal about the FBI’s investigation into Russian collusion during the 2016 Trump campaign.
Bolton now faces 18 charges related to mishandling classified materials, alleged to have “shared more than 1,000 pages of information” regarding his role as national security adviser.
James has been charged with two counts of bank fraud and making false statements to a financial institution, specifically tied to a loan for a three-bedroom home in Norfolk, Virginia, which she was supposed to occupy as a second residence.
Furthermore, James is under a federal criminal investigation concerning claims of “selective enforcement” in lawsuits against Trump’s businesses and the NRA.
She had previously vowed to prosecute Trump during her campaign and filed a civil suit against him and the Trump Organization in September 2022, alleging Trump inflated his net worth to secure better loan terms. In February 2024, a judge ordered Trump to pay $355 million, which was later reversed by an appeals court in August 2025.
