Trump Calls for Investigation into Ilhan Omar
In a recent series of posts on Truth Social, former President Donald Trump advocated for a thorough criminal investigation into Representative Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota. This announcement took place on Thursday, January 23, 2026.
Trump raised questions about the Somali-American congresswoman’s apparent wealth, suggesting that her net worth, now exceeding $30 million, is inconsistent with a politician’s salary. He argued that, given this considerable wealth, an investigation into her financial dealings is warranted.
“Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is worth over $30 million. There is no way she could legally accumulate this much wealth while on a politician’s salary. She should be investigated for financial and political crimes, and the investigation should start now!” he stated in his post.
Omar is notable for being one of the first two Muslim women to hold a position in Congress, alongside Rashida Tlaib from Michigan. Despite Trump’s claims, Omar has previously dismissed similar accusations as “right-wing disinformation” and denied any assertions of being a billionaire.
The congresswoman currently represents Minnesota’s 5th District, which is already under scrutiny by the House Oversight Committee concerning her and her husband’s financial concerns. Questions have arisen, particularly from Republican lawmakers, about the significant increase in their wealth since Omar’s election to Congress in 2019.
Over the years, Omar’s loyalty to the U.S. has been called into question. In 2024, a dispute emerged between her and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison following a speech she gave about the Horn of Africa that seemed to imply her first loyalty was to Somalia. She suggested that her role in Congress was to ensure U.S. compliance with the Somali community’s wishes.
“We Somalis are a people who love each other… Some of us are rough with each other, but when the going gets tough, we support each other,” she said during that speech. “The US government will do what we ask,” she added.
Initially, Ellison criticized her remarks, viewing the “Somalia first” sentiment as harmful. However, he later retracted his condemnation after receiving feedback from local voters and progressive groups, claiming his concerns were based on a biased translation.
Omar is currently married to Tim Mynett, marking her third marriage. Mynett previously worked at E Street Group, which had ties to Omar’s campaign. His past divorce and accusations of an affair with Omar during that time attracted media scrutiny, although no formal wrongdoing was established by the FEC.
In 2022, Mynett’s ventures faced financial challenges, with a South Dakota-based cannabis company investing $3.5 million in his business. Lawsuits emerged alleging that funds were misused. Additionally, he was accused in a California lawsuit of defrauding investors related to his wine business.
Amid these ongoing matters, the couple’s rise to wealth has drawn attention. Financial records indicate Mynett’s businesses were struggling just a few years ago. Yet, a report from May 2025 revealed his winery and investment venture received significant valuations, suggesting a considerable increase in their combined net worth.
Months prior, Omar publicly stated that she did not own stocks, real estate, or have substantial wealth, emphasizing the allegations against her as part of a right-wing disinformation campaign.
“Since my election, there has been a coordinated right-wing disinformation campaign making all sorts of outlandish claims, including the ridiculous claim that I am worth millions, which is completely false,” she stated in an interview.
Amid mounting allegations, calls for investigation into Omar’s financial activities have intensified, particularly concerning the misuse of federal aid meant for social services in Minnesota. Republican leaders, including Chairman James Comer, have cited the urgency for scrutiny, especially given the fraud’s proximity to her district.
Recently, Omar urged Minnesotans to attend a rally and suggested they skip daily responsibilities to participate, indicating her commitment to her advocacy.
