Trump Comments on Trade with India
In Washington, US President Donald Trump stated that India has proposed to eliminate all tariffs on American products. Despite this apparent breakthrough, he indicated that he would not finalize the trade agreement.
During a Fox News interview on Friday, Trump described India as the prime example of a country whose trade barriers he aims to eliminate.
“They make it nearly impossible to conduct business. Did you know they’re ready to cut all their tariffs for the US?” he remarked.
Yet, Trump conveyed a mixed message regarding the deal’s progress, mentioning, “It’s going to come soon. I’m not rushing. Everyone wants to trade with us.”
He also clarified that he has no intention to “trade with everyone.”
Responding to Trump’s assertion about India’s offer of a trade deal with “literally zero tariffs,” Foreign Minister Jaishankar emphasized that the ongoing discussions are intricate and still unresolved.
“Trade negotiations between India and the US are complex. They won’t be completed until all aspects are settled. The trade agreements need to be beneficial for both nations,” he stated.
Trump’s comments imply that while some nations may be considering adjusting their trade relationships with the US before the expiration of higher import duties in July, others might have to navigate unilateral decisions regarding their tariffs.
These remarks come as the Trump administration observes a shift in global trade patterns.
Earlier on Friday, Trump mentioned that he intends to establish new import tax rates for trade partners within the “next two to three weeks or more.”
He also noted that the prospects of expanding trade with Pakistan, which is a rival to India, are uncertain.
Previously, Trump had indicated that the trade dynamics were part of the US’s efforts to mediate a ceasefire between India and Pakistan amidst ongoing border tensions following recent terrorist attacks in Pahargam.
“I use trade to settle scores and create peace,” Trump remarked.
The US has also pursued efforts to resolve its trade conflicts with China, which Trump has portrayed as a generous gesture towards the world’s second-largest economy.
Following recent discussions, the US lowered its tariff rate on China from 145% to 30%, while China responded by reducing its tariffs from 125% to 10% and engaging in further negotiations.
“If I hadn’t engaged in business with China, I believe China would have crumbled,” Trump added.
