Trump Orders DOJ Investigation into Meat Processing Companies
Recently, President Trump directed the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate significant meat processing companies in the U.S. This move is focused on potential collusion and price manipulation, which allegedly contribute to the rising costs of beef.
This announcement came shortly after Republicans expressed their commitment to addressing everyday living expenses through legislation. Interestingly, despite being a Democratic stronghold, voters seemed to prioritize a campaign focused on the high cost of living, leading to a Democratic victory by year’s end.
The U.S. military’s top commander has accused meatpacking firms, many of which are foreign-owned, of artificially increasing beef prices, describing the situation as “shady.” He highlighted the discrepancy between falling cattle prices and surging boxed beef prices.
“I have called on the Department of Justice to immediately begin an investigation into meat packing companies that are driving up the price of beef through illegal collusion,” President Trump stated. “We will always protect America’s ranchers and hold accountable the foreign meat processors that jeopardize our food supply.”
“It’s crucial we take swift action to protect consumers, fight illegal monopolies, and prevent these businesses from profiting at the expense of the American people,” he continued.
Throughout 2025, retail beef prices have soared, driven by supply shortages and constant consumer demand. The drought that started in 2020 has severely affected major ranching areas like Texas and Oklahoma, and ranchers are expressing concerns over the consolidation in the meatpacking industry, where a few companies dominate.
“This entire industry is highly concentrated beyond what would typically be considered healthy for the economy,” commented Bill Bullard, CEO of R-CALF USA.
Last month, Tyson, Cargill, and JBS settled a lawsuit for $87.5 million, facing allegations of conspiring to limit beef supply and inflate prices.
“Thank you, Mr. President, for advocating for America’s farmers and consumers!” said Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins. “For too long, ranching families have been pressured by large foreign meat processing companies that manipulate prices and threaten small businesses.”
“It’s time we restore America First in our food system,” she added, emphasizing the need for accountability and fair markets for those who produce beef.
