Trump Signs Executive Order for IndyCar Race in D.C.
On Friday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to hold an IndyCar race in Washington, D.C. scheduled for August 2026. Dubbed the “Freedom 250 Grand Prix,” this event will take place from August 21-23 in collaboration with INDYCAR.
This race is notable as it’s the first of its kind in the nation’s capital, according to information from the White House. Roger Penske, the owner of IndyCar, expressed gratitude in a statement to NBC News, stating that Trump’s initiative is a remarkable recognition for their sport. He added, “We are grateful for his confidence and support as IndyCar prepares to honor our nation with a spectacular racing spectacle.”
Penske went on to say, “This will be a truly memorable event that celebrates our nation’s independence and the legacy of patriotism, innovation, and excellence that drives motorsports across America.”
Trump described the event on Twitter, noting how it’s part of celebrating the country’s 250th birthday and American motor racing. He mentioned the dates again, emphasizing the excitement surrounding it.
In 2019, Penske received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, awarded by Trump for his accomplishments as a driver and for founding Penske Corporation and Team Penske, which has achieved success in races like the Indianapolis 500.
The Departments of the Interior and Transportation, along with the Mayor’s Office, are expected to plan routes around the National Mall to highlight D.C.’s iconic sites during the race.
Beyond the race, the administration revealed plans for various summer 2026 events, including the “Great American State Fair,” the new “Patriot Games,” and even a UFC fight at the White House. There’s also an initiative to reopen the National Garden of American Heroes.
