Trump Announces Major Steel Plant Development in Iowa

President Donald Trump revealed plans on Monday for the construction of the largest steel plant in U.S. history, located in Iowa. Representatives from Essar Group, an Indian company that owns Mesabi Metallics, were present during the announcement in the Oval Office, along with various Iowa officials.

“We’re very excited today to announce that Mesabi Metallics will be establishing the largest steel plant ever in American history, right here in Iowa. It’s not just the largest in the country; it’s among the largest globally,” Trump stated.

Once operational, the facility is expected to draw iron ore from a Minnesota mine and produce an impressive 10 million tons of steel every year.

“This marks the first new iron ore mine in the U.S. in over 50 years, and it’s known for having the highest quality ore. Essentially, we’ll be mining, melting, and manufacturing this steel right here in the USA, which is pretty rare,” he explained.

The project is anticipated to generate as many as 6,000 construction jobs and nearly 2,000 positions in manufacturing and mining, potentially adding about $95 billion to the national economy, which remains the world’s largest by a significant margin.

During his speech, Trump emphasized his steel tariff policies while critiquing the losses in manufacturing jobs that occurred under former President Joe Biden. He noted, “Under Sleepy Joe Biden, steel production dropped sharply, and nearly 200,000 manufacturing jobs vanished in the year before I assumed office.”

Trump further commented that steel production is making a significant comeback, attributing it to the tariffs he imposed. Initially, there was a 25 percent tariff on steel, which he raised to 50 percent in June 2025.

“Many companies are choosing to build their plants here to avoid tariffs. It’s not overly complex, even if some act like they don’t get it. They may just not want to give us credit,” he remarked.

He added that the tariffs have resulted in substantial profits for the U.S., which contributes to his ability to propose offering $5,000 to every adult, should Republicans regain control of both the House and the Senate.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick supported Trump’s statements regarding the tariffs, stating, “These 232 tariffs — the steel tariffs — are having an impact. Without them, we wouldn’t see this mine or the steel plant being built.”
