The former president slammed Biden early Wednesday, a day after Hollywood star Robert De Niro spoke on behalf of the Biden campaign outside the Manhattan courthouse where Trump’s hush-money trial is taking place.
“I never realized how small former actor Robert De Niro was, both mentally and physically,” Trump said. I wrote in the post on his Truth Social platform just after midnight on Wednesday.
“Outside the courthouse, De Niro, who suffers from an incurable disease known today in medical circles as Trump Delagement Syndrome, encountered a force far more powerful than the radical left: MAGA,” Trump continued, using “TDS” to refer to the fabricated condition he and his supporters often attribute to their critics.
In an attempt to directly intervene in President Trump’s legal troubles, President Biden’s campaign held a surprise press conference in lower Manhattan where actor Harry Dunn and Capitol Police Officer Michael Fanone, who were injured at the Capitol during the January 6, 2021, riot, spoke about the dangers to President Trump’s reelection.
While Biden’s surrogate spoke, at least 20 Trump supporters were in a nearby park waving flags, wearing “Make America Great Again” jerseys and yelling a variety of slogans, including “Kill Joe Biden.” Nearby was a large flag bearing the phrase “Trump or Death.”
After the press conference ended, a group of protesters again chased De Niro, jeered and yelled at him, and a large police presence surrounded the park where the press conference was held.
Many in the crowd chanted “we love Trump” and “Juan Merchan is corrupt,” a reference to the judge in the hush money case and echoing Trump’s frequent comments about Merchan.
Closing arguments were wrapped up in the Manhattan trial on Tuesday. Trump faces 34 counts of falsifying business records in connection with payments he made to porn star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 campaign to silence her allegations of an affair – charges the former president denies. The case will now go to a jury for deliberation.
De Niro, who filmed a campaign ad for Biden last week, blasted the former president outside the courthouse as Trump supporters screamed and heckled him behind him.
“Donald Trump created this. He should tell people not to do this. … He’s trying to create total chaos, and in some areas and places he’s been successful,” De Niro said.
“It’s not meant to scare people. No, wait, maybe it’s meant to scare people,” he added. “If Trump returns to the White House, the freedoms and elections we take for granted will be gone. Forget it. … He’s never going to go away.”
The actor also called Trump a “clown” at one point.
As De Niro spoke, protesters could be heard chanting, “De Niro is scared” and “I haven’t seen a good movie of you in 20 years.”
In his latest online post, the former president disparaged De Niro and suggested he has been hindered in his job since he began campaigning for Biden.
“Since entering politics at the behest of the unscrupulous Joe Biden, Robert’s films, artistry and brand have declined significantly and he looks very pathetic and sad,” Trump wrote. “Where is Joe DiMaggio!!!”
The Hill has reached out to De Niro’s press team for comment.
