Trump Praises New UK Prime Minister During UN Meeting

President Trump expressed optimism about the United Kingdom’s potential, suggesting that it could be realized with effective leadership, as he met with new Prime Minister Andy Burnham in New York on Tuesday.

This was the first face-to-face encounter between Burnham, who has been a vocal critic of Trump, and the President, as they held discussions on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. In his typical fashion when addressing British leaders he might not fully align with, Trump offered praises while subtly pointing out areas he perceives as weaknesses in Burnham’s leadership.

Though he maintained a courteous tone for former Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, Trump hinted at his true sentiments about Starmer, stating that his relationship with the UK has improved since Burnham took office.

While complimenting Burnham, Trump remarked, “I think he’s going to be a great Prime Minister; he’s got a lot of great assets on his side… he gets it, he understands what he has to do.”

Trump’s long-standing affection for Britain seemed clear, as he emphasized that the nation could achieve greatness if given strong political guidance, suggesting it has yet to receive that leadership. He noted, “there’s great patriotism in [Britain], they want to see great things happen. Tremendous potential.” He compared it to other countries he had visited, suggesting they lack the same promise.

During their conversation, Trump touched on familiar topics, such as his concerns about Britain’s open borders and the rising energy costs linked to stringent environmental policies. He also addressed the matter of the Chagos Islands, a strategically significant base in the Indian Ocean, which some argue has been overlooked in favor of a United Nations directive.

Despite the Biden administration’s support for a plan involving these islands, Trump voiced his disapproval, calling it a terrible agreement. He stated, “I think it’s ridiculous. It’s strategically very important… a very important piece of real estate.” Burnham appeared to agree, acknowledging the importance of the islands.

Before their meeting, Nigel Farage had commented on the Chagos Islands issue, labeling it an unnecessary deal that goes against the interests of both the Chagossian people and U.S. allies. Following Trump’s remarks, Farage suggested that the deal may now be doomed, expressing relief.

Burnham also discussed various topics during the press conference, including the Falkland Islands and support for Ukraine, indicating a budding rapport with Trump. He reassured that Britain was willing to engage in Middle Eastern matters.
