Former President Trump claimed on Friday that he had nearly $500 million in cash, contradicting a message from his lawyers who say he can’t afford the $454 million bail in his civil fraud case. .
“Thanks to hard work, talent, and luck, I now have nearly $500 million in cash, and I intended to spend a significant amount of it on my presidential campaign.” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
President Trump criticized New York State Judge Arthur Engoron and New York State Attorney General Letitia James (Democratic), saying they knew how much money they had and intentionally set their penalties within that range. He said he did.
Engoron was found to have conspired with Trump to lie about his net worth to get preferential treatment from banks and insurance companies, and was ordered to pay approximately $355 million in penalties and interest. The total is now worth more than $454 million, with $112,000 of interest added daily.
The former president faces a Monday deadline to either secure bail or pay the $454 million owed in the lawsuit. Earlier this week, his lawyer suggested it would be “impossible” to secure bond.
His lawyers claim they spent “countless hours” negotiating with one major insurance company and contacted 30 companies to help with the bond, to no avail. His lawyers also said Trump cannot pledge real estate as part of the bond.
Trump’s critics have suggested that if the former president is unable to secure bonds by Monday, he may seek funding from foreign sources.
His lawyer, Alina Haba, responded to these claims on Wednesday. “Well, there are rules and regulations that are public. I can’t talk about strategy. It requires certain things and we have to follow those rules,” she told Fox News. told Martha McCallum.
If Trump does not meet the deadline, James, who has filed a fraud case against Trump, said he could seize some of Trump’s assets.
