President Trump said Wednesday that he will meet with Democrats for lunch next week, but it was not immediately clear who will be invited.
“They're a party of some really bad things,” Trump said at the Future Investment Initiative (FII) Institute in Miami. “And I think they'll change. I think they have to change.”
“I'm going to have lunch with some of the Democrats next week. It would be great if we could work together,” he added. “I think it's great to work with, but they have to change. They can't be selected for the program they want.”
When asked who would be attending later, Trump told reporters, “You'll see when I do that. Some good things. Some big names.”
The conference is a rare example of bipartisan outreach, with Democrats willing to speak directly to Trump, who has harshly criticized him for having an autocratic tendency.
One of the few Democrats who have shown enthusiasm to talk to Trump is Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.), who met the president at Mar Lago before taking office.
“Overall, it was a positive experience. I mean, he was kind, he was sincerely. It wasn't even a theater of any kind. Take your photo to put something out on social media. We weren't about to do it. It was really, really, a conversation. We actually talked for over an hour,” Fetterman said. “Opinion.”
