Trump says he supports ‘modifying’ the 25th Amendment

Former President Trump has said he supports a “fix” to the 25th Amendment to the Constitution that would allow for the removal of a vice president who lies or conspires to cover up the incompetence of the U.S. president.

“If that's what they do, to cover up the president of the United States, they should be impeached immediately and removed from office, because that's exactly what they did,” Trump told supporters at a rally in Mosinee, Wisconsin.

Trump's support for expanding the 25th Amendment came as he and other Republicans went after Harris, accusing her of covering up the president's mental health after his dismal performance in a late June debate and his decision not to seek reelection. Shortly after the debate, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) and other Republicans said Biden's Cabinet should consider using the 25th Amendment to remove the president from office.

A constitutional amendment requires approval by three-quarters of state legislatures to be ratified. Trump has been impeached twice by the House of Representatives during his four years in office but has never been convicted by the Senate.

The former president's thoughts on the 25th Amendment came as he was going after Biden and trying to figure out how to adapt to the current dynamics of the election. Despite Biden's decision in late July, Trump has continued to go after the president at rallies. Trump has denounced the Democratic Party's pressure on Biden to step aside and field a new candidate as a “coup.”

The Hill has reached out to Harris' campaign for comment.
