Former President Trump said on Saturday that he “took a bullet for democracy” after being shot in the ear in an assassination attempt on his life last week.
“They’re really extreme, but I don’t know anything about it,” Trump said of Project 2025 at a rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
“I don’t want to know anything about it. But they keep spreading misinformation and disinformation and saying that Trump is a threat to democracy,” Trump continued, referring to Democrats. “I say, ‘What have you ever done for democracy? I took a bullet for democracy last week.'”
Democrats have sought to link Trump to Project 2025, a conservative policy platform organized by the Heritage Platform, which includes donors from the former Trump administration. The former president and his campaign have disowned Project 2025.
Trump’s comments came a week after the former president survived an assassination attempt during a campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania, after he was shot in the ear and forced off the stage less than 10 minutes into his speech.
One attendee and the gunman were killed during the attack, and two others were injured.
“It is by the grace of Almighty God that I stand before you,” Trump said at a rally in Michigan.
