Former President Donald Trump offered rare words of empathy to President Biden this week about the impact of addiction.
In an interview with Fox News on Thursday, Trump said he understands from personal experience the devastating impact addiction can have on families.
“I know this because I have family members who have it,” Trump told Fox News. “It’s very hard.”

Trump did not provide specific details about which family members he was referring to, but his brother, Fred Trump, has been open about his long-standing struggles with alcoholism.
Fred Trump’s drug addiction ultimately compromised his daily life and contributed to the heart attack that took his life in 1981.
“It’s a very tough situation for the father. It’s a very tough situation for the brothers and sisters. Whether it’s alcohol, drugs, whatever, it continues and it never stops,” Trump continued in the Fox News interview.

He added: “This is a difficult thing, a difficult moment for the family. This is a difficult moment for any family involved in this.”
Trump has previously credited his decision to cut down on alcohol to his older brother, who warned him never to drink.
Hunter Biden, the eldest son, was found guilty Tuesday of all charges relating to making false statements about a gun purchase, making false statements about information required to be kept by federally licensed gun dealers and possession of a firearm by an unlawful user of or addict to a controlled substance.

Hunter Biden has a history of substance abuse, best documented in his 2021 memoir, “Beautiful Things.”
The memoir shares stories from Hunter’s drug dealing past, including how he once had to snort crack cocaine every 20 minutes, how his addiction was so severe that he referred to himself as a “crack daddy” to his drug dealers, and how a Washington DC crack dealer nicknamed Hunter “Bicycles.”
President Biden has expressed unconditional love and support for his son, despite his high-profile struggle with substance abuse.
