Trump Says Kamala Harris Raised Money for 2020 Rioters

The claim: Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday claimed that then-Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) helped raise money for rioters in Minnesota in 2020.

Verdict: True. Harris called on her X/Twitter followers to donate to a bail fund for people arrested in Minneapolis.

During Tuesday's presidential debate, Trump said Harris “went to Minnesota and wanted to release criminals who killed people and burned down Minneapolis. She went out and raised the money to get them out of prison.”

In June 2020, Harris asked her followers to donate to the Minnesota Freedom Fund, which pays bail for people who cannot afford it. Raised 35 million amid widespread celebrity attention.

“If you're able, please donate now to the @MNFreedomFund to help pay bail for those protesting on the ground in Minnesota,” Harris wrote.

of Minneapolis Star Tribune Reported Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey criticized Mayor Tim Walz for not responding.

Frey said in an interview Monday that Walz was hesitant to send in the National Guard to quell the escalating violence and then blamed the governor for allowing the city to burn.

Frey said he immediately called Governor Walz at 6:29 p.m. to provide him with the information and ask him to send in the National Guard. “We communicated the seriousness of the situation. The urgency was clear,” Frey said.

“He didn't say yes,” Frey said of Waltz, “he just said he'd consider it.”

During the riots in the city, Harris was raising bail funds for people arrested by Minneapolis police.
