President-elect Donald Trump congratulated Sen. John Thune (RS.D.) on his election victory to become the next Senate Republican leader.
In the 2024 elections, Republicans will gain a majority in both houses of Congress.
“Congratulations to the newly elected Senate Majority Leader, Sen. John Thune. He will act quickly and do a great job,” President Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

Republican Sens. Rick Scott of Florida and John Cornyn of Texas were also vying for the role.
“While this is not the result we were hoping for, we will do everything in our power to ensure that John Thune accomplishes President Trump's policies,” Scott said in a statement.
“We are united and ready to enact President Trump’s agenda from day one, and we are working with our colleagues to take advantage of opportunities like confirming next year’s nominees, addressing the national debt, and extending the Trump tax cuts. I look forward to working together and reversing the Biden-Harris administration's disastrous border policies,” Cornyn said in a statement.

Thune will replace current Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) next year. McConnell has been in the job for a long time, but did not seek another term.
President Trump said he looks forward to working with Thune and other senators elected to various roles in the Senate Republican leadership.
“He and Sen. John Barrasso (Senate Majority Whip), Sen. Tom Cotton (Senate Republican Conference Chair), Shelley Moore Capito (Senate Republican Policy Chair), and Sen. James Lankford (R-Senate Scott (National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman), I look forward to working with Senator Tim (Conference Vice Chair) and Make America Great Again! ” he said in the post.
