Trump and Macron Set to Meet Ahead of U.N. General Assembly

President Donald Trump is slated to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday afternoon, right before the upcoming United Nations General Assembly debate. According to Le Monde, which cites sources from the White House, their meeting is set for 5:35 p.m. EST in New York.

This meeting will occur just hours after Macron’s discussion with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Sunday at Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, a French archipelago near Newfoundland, Canada.

During this week, numerous world leaders are gathering in New York for the 81st session of the U.N. General Assembly, with significant debates scheduled from September 22-28. Macron will travel directly from the archipelago to New York to engage in discussions at the U.N., fitting in a meeting with President Trump during the event.

Macron is also expected to have talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky while he is in New York. A spokesperson from the French Foreign Ministry indicated that France is organizing a U.N. Security Council meeting focused on Ukraine, which will include discussions on “Black Sea food security and grain exports.”

As reported by Le Figaro, the Élysée Palace is currently working on scheduling additional meetings for Macron with Middle Eastern leaders, such as Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian. This comes at a time when France is grappling with soaring fuel prices, largely due to the escalating tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Iran-aligned Houthis.

Additionally, Macron is expected to engage with key international players in the artificial intelligence arena—a topic that France wishes to elevate in global discussions. According to various French outlets, he will deliver his speech at the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday.

In his address, Macron is likely to unveil his vision for “effective multilateralism,” which, according to Le Figaro and the Élysée Palace, focuses on building coalitions of states and stakeholders capable of achieving tangible outcomes.

During a press conference on Friday, Macron commented on the current state of the United Nations, stating that it is “in trouble” and raising concerns about the overall “effectiveness” of multilateral efforts. The U.N. has announced that the theme for the upcoming debate sessions will be “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
