Trump’s Proposed Naming for Commanders Stadium
President Donald Trump has reportedly expressed a desire to have the new stadium for the Washington Commanders named after him. This news surfaced shortly after the White House announced his attendance at the upcoming Commanders game against the Detroit Lions, where he plans to honor veterans during halftime.
While the White House didn’t confirm the specifics to Fox News Digital, Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt noted, “President Trump is the one who made the new stadium possible, so it’s definitely a beautiful name.” This seems to suggest that Trump’s influence is indeed significant in this context.
The new dome stadium, set to replace RFK Stadium, carries a hefty price tag of about $3.7 billion. It is reported that there have been some discussions, although informal, with Josh Harris and other owners of the Commanders regarding the naming.
According to a White House official, “That’s what the president wants and it’s probably going to happen.” Despite this, team officials mentioned that no formal talks have been held yet. Ultimately, the District of Columbia Council and the National Park Service will have a say in the stadium’s name.
Earlier in the year, Trump had a contentious situation with the Commanders’ organization, even threatening to block plans for the stadium if the team didn’t revert to its former name, the Redskins.
In a recent Truth Social post, Trump stated, “My comments about the Washington Redskins were a total blowout, but only in a very positive way.” He further insisted that unless the name changes back, the stadium deal might not happen, arguing that it would be more beneficial for the team and fans overall.
He also reiterated views regarding the name change issue, urging the team owners to consider the will of the community, particularly Native Americans, suggesting that their heritage was being overlooked.
Trump was seen with Josh Harris, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell during the announcement relating to the RFK Stadium redevelopment.
This Sunday marks Trump’s first NFL game attendance this season; he had previously participated in Super Bowl LIX, where the Philadelphia Eagles triumphed over the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Commanders expressed their enthusiasm, welcoming Trump to the game as they honor veterans. They stated, “This Sunday, the entire Commanders organization is proud to join the NFL’s league-wide service initiative in recognition of the dedication and sacrifice of our nation’s veterans, active-duty military, and their families.”
