Trump selects Keith Sonderling for the permanent position of US labor secretary

Acting Labor Secretary Nominated for Permanent Position

Acting Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling has been nominated by President Trump to officially take on the role of U.S. Secretary of Labor, pending Senate confirmation. Sonderling has been leading the Labor Department in an acting capacity since Lori Chavez-Delemer’s resignation in April.

In his announcement on Truth Social, Trump expressed his honor in making Sonderling’s appointment permanent, highlighting his previous roles including Deputy Secretary and experience in the Wage and Hour Division. Trump noted that Sonderling has a track record of delivering results for American workers.

Amid this news, Sonderling emphasized the administration’s commitment to revitalizing American jobs, particularly through investments from major companies like Lockheed Martin and Toyota, and focusing on skilled labor in manufacturing and construction sectors. He mentioned the need for upskilling workers to meet job demands in these areas.

Chavez-Delemer resigned while under investigation following serious misconduct allegations. Reports detail claims of creating a hostile work environment, drinking on the job, and requiring staff to run personal errands. There are also accusations concerning inappropriate behavior from her husband towards employees.

In light of these controversies, it seems the Labor Department is at a crossroads as it looks to stabilize its leadership and reaffirm its dedication to workforce development.
