Trump Appoints Sean Duffy as NASA’s Interim Administrator
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced that he has appointed Transportation Director Sean Duffy as NASA’s interim administrator.
Trump shared the news on Truth Social, expressing his enthusiasm: “I’m excited to direct our great Transport Secretary, Sean Duffy, to NASA interim administrator.” He further emphasized Duffy’s potential to be “an incredible leader in space agencies,” even if just for a brief time, calling this role especially crucial at the moment.
The president praised Duffy’s achievements in the Department of Transportation, referring to his tenure as “incredible.” He highlighted Duffy’s efforts in modernizing air traffic control alongside the revival of infrastructure, stating, “We’ll rebuild roads and bridges and make them efficient and beautiful.”
Duffy, a former lawmaker from Wisconsin and a long-time associate of Trump, expressed excitement about taking on this new mission. “I am honored to embrace this task. It’s time to take over space. Let’s launch it,” he posted on X.
He will step in for Janet Petro, who has held the NASA administrator position since January. Notably, Trump also withdrew Jared Isaacman’s nomination for the role back in May.
Isaacman, a billionaire astronaut and a key figure with Elon Musk, had been appointed by Trump in December 2024. However, he came under scrutiny due to potential conflicts stemming from Musk’s connections with SpaceX, prompting concerns from some officials.
Trump explained the withdrawal of Isaacman’s nomination was based on increasing concerns regarding “a thorough review of previous associations” and “corporate entanglement.”
Under Trump, NASA’s role is seen as vital to the administration’s defense, innovation, and economic strategies. The former president has consistently underscored the significance of space-related initiatives, having established the Space Force during his initial term.
The White House has not yet responded to requests for comments regarding this appointment.
