President Donald Trump is ramping up federal law enforcement efforts in Washington, D.C., aiming to tackle crime more aggressively. This week, additional federal agents are set to be deployed, starting as soon as Friday, according to officials.
The initiative, backed by the White House, stems from an executive order issued in March that encourages collaboration between federal agencies and local authorities to reduce crime in the capital.
“Washington, D.C., is a wonderful city, but unfortunately, it’s been suffering from a rise in minor violent crimes for quite some time,” stated White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt in a message to Fox News Digital. “President Trump is dedicated to enhancing safety in our nation’s capital, making it a more appealing place for residents, lawmakers, and visitors alike.”
In a more controversial move, Trump suggested on Monday that he might federalize Washington, D.C., and propose that local minors and gang members aged 14 and older face adult charges. This comes after a disturbing incident involving a former government employee who was violently attacked by two young boys.
White House representatives emphasized that revitalizing D.C. remains a significant focus for the president. Federal officials will also ensure that D.C. adheres to immigration laws and will support local crime labs in their investigations.
Furthermore, a newly established task force aims to boost recruitment for the city’s Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), enhance officer retention, and foster cooperation between federal and local law enforcement to curb crime.
Other priorities include detaining individuals who pose a genuine threat to public safety, promoting a concealed carry permit process, addressing fare evasion in public transportation, and reassessing policies related to pretrial detention.
Notably, the heightened federal presence will be felt in several key areas, including the National Mall, Lafayette Park, Union Station, Rock Creek Park, and major parkways. Officials believe that this initiative will lead to more rigorous enforcement, facilitate arrests of illegal immigrants, and help clear homeless encampments from public spaces.
While the specifics of the operation are still being finalized, the administration is optimistic about the steps being taken to improve public safety in the capital.
