Trump’s Plan to Boost Hollywood
In a recent announcement, President Trump revealed plans to introduce tariffs on foreign films and initiate a new bond program aimed at revitalizing the filmmaking scene in Los Angeles.
“I’m going to put tariffs on foreign movies, whether they’re from Canada or elsewhere, because, honestly, Los Angeles has lost a lot of its movie industry,” Trump shared with the California Post during a Friday meeting in the Oval Office.
“So, I’m thinking about imposing tariffs and offering some low-interest bonds for our film industry. We need to take it back,” he added, indicating a strong desire to support local productions.
Back in September, Trump hinted at imposing tariffs up to 100% on foreign films, although those measures haven’t taken effect yet. While the bond program could potentially assist studios with their financing, details on how it will be implemented have yet to be provided.
“I’m aware of many people in that industry,” Trump noted. “They often say, ‘We prefer not to go to Canada or Australia for shoots. We want to stay here in Los Angeles, where the magic happens.’ And I’m open to making that happen.”
Emphasizing his commitment, Trump reiterated, “I really want to bring the movie business back to Los Angeles.”
Reflecting on the entertainment climate, Trump expressed concern over the industry’s current state, noting his past hosting experience from NBC’s “The Apprentice,” which ran from 2004 to 2015.
Regarding the upcoming Oscars, which Conan O’Brien is set to host in March, Trump mentioned he might tune in but hopes, “I hope it has that same glamour it once had.”
“I loved the Oscars,” he remarked. “Truth is, after they started making personal attacks on me, like that actor Robert De Niro—things really changed. Their ratings just took a nosedive.”
