Trump Shares Photo of Maduro’s Arrest
On Saturday, Donald Trump shared a photo on Truth Social showing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro aboard a U.S. military plane. This came after Maduro was arrested while en route to face drug trafficking charges in the United States.
Trump mentioned that Venezuelan socialists were on the USS Iwo Jima, which is an amphibious assault ship currently in the Caribbean, engaged in Operation Southern Spear. This operation focuses on dismantling illegal drug trafficking operations in international waters off the Florida coast. The majority of drug trafficking, according to U.S. and international officials, is linked to the Cartel de los Soles, a major cocaine syndicate led by Maduro.
Maduro was taken into custody by U.S. forces early Saturday in Caracas. The U.S. has held accusations against him for years as a key player in international drug trafficking and has offered a $50 million reward for information leading to his capture. As of the latest updates, it was unclear if anyone had claimed this reward in connection with Saturday’s mission.
After Maduro’s arrest, Attorney General Pam Bondi, alongside his wife, Cilia Flores, announced serious charges against the couple. These charges include “narco-terrorism conspiracy, conspiracy to import cocaine, and possession of machine guns.” There are numerous allegations against the Maduro regime for human rights violations against dissidents, including children, documented over the past decade.
Following the photo’s release, Trump held a press conference stating that the military mission to apprehend Maduro was a success with no American casualties. He indicated that the U.S. aims to oversee a transition back to constitutional democracy in Venezuela. While he hinted at the possibility of a larger military response if needed, he emphasized the preference for minimal U.S. involvement moving forward. He suggested that a second military operation might be necessary, though he believed the initial success made that less likely.
