Trump signs executive order designating English official language of US

President Trump designated English as the official US language on Saturday Presidential Order It abolished former President Clinton's executive action and supported individuals with limited English proficiency.

The order eliminates the need for federal agencies to provide language assistance to non-English speakers.

Federal agencies have the option to provide documents and other services in foreign languages.

The president said the order's goal is to “promote unity, nurture a shared American culture for all citizens, and ensure consistency in government operations.”

“Speaking English not only helps to open the door economically, but also helps newcomers engage with the community, participate in national traditions and give back to our society,” Trump wrote in turn.

“This order recognizes and celebrates the long tradition of multinational American citizens who learned English and passed it to their children for generations to come,” he added.

Trump has directed Attorney General Pam Bondy to provide up-to-date guidance, consistent with applicable laws regarding acceptable services.

Order will be cancelled Clinton's 2000 order “To improve access to federal and federal support programs and activities for those with limited English proficiency as a result of the country of origin.”
