Trump slams Dick Cheney as ‘irrelevant’ after he backed Harris

Former President Trump late Friday responded to former Vice President Dick Cheney's decision to support his Democratic rival in November, calling the former Republican vice president an “irrelevant RINO,” meaning a “Republican in name only.”

“Dick Cheney is an irrelevant Republican who, along with his daughter, lost by the largest margin in the history of congressional elections!” the former president said. I wrote in the post On Truth Social, he referred to former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), who lost to a challenger backed by President Trump in the 2022 midterm elections.

The criticism came after Cheney, who served under former President George W. Bush, said in a statement Friday that she would support Harris as vice president in the fall.

“As Americans, we each have an obligation to put country above partisanship and uphold the Constitution,” Cheney said. “That's why I'm voting for Vice President Kamala Harris.”

In a post on Friday, the Republican presidential candidate noted that Cheney failed to pardon former adviser Lewis “Scooter” Libby.

Libby was convicted in 2007 in connection with an investigation into the leaking of the identities of CIA officials and later sentenced to 30 months in prison. President Trump pardoned the former Bush official in 2018.

“They couldn't pardon Scooter Libby, who did so much for them (but was so wronged), so I did!” Trump wrote.

The former president also claimed that Cheney, like his comrade Kamala Harris, is “the king of endless, pointless wars that are wasting lives and trillions of dollars.”

“I am a peace president. Only I can stop World War III!” he claimed.

Rep. Liz Cheney has emerged as one of President Trump's most vocal critics since the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Rep. Cheney was one of 10 Republican senators who voted in favor of impeaching the former president for attempting to remain in power after the 2020 election, and she also participated in the House Select Committee investigation into the January 6 riot.

Trump slammed Cheney in a rant on Friday night, saying she serves on a committee of “political losers” and that her actions were “unthinkable.”

“She and her Unselect have deleted and destroyed all evidence and information. Gone. [former Speaker] “Nancy Pelosi was in charge of J6 but did not provide security,” he wrote.

The Wyoming Republican announced his support for Harris earlier this week, saying he had thought carefully about the decision but could not support Trump.

In his post, the former president wrote that those who served on the January 6th select committee “should be prosecuted for their actions.”

But, he added, “Comrade Kamala is even worse!”
