Trump’s Threat to Federal Reserve Governor

President Donald Trump indicated he would dismiss Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook if she does not resign in light of mortgage fraud allegations against her.

Cook is currently under investigation by the Department of Justice. This follows documents released by Bill Prute, the director of the Federal Housing and Finance Agency, which support the claims against her.

“If someone commits mortgage fraud, they undermine the faith and integrity of our system. It doesn’t matter who you are—no one is beyond the law,” Trump expressed.

During a press briefing on Friday, Trump made it clear he would take steps if Cook remained in her position. “Yeah, I’ll fire her if she doesn’t resign. What she did was a bad thing,” he noted, adding, “So if she doesn’t resign, I’ll fire her.”

Prute shared a document alleging that Cook had taken a loan from her Michigan home, claiming it as her primary residence, and shortly thereafter designated her out-of-state apartment as her primary residence as well.

In a statement, Prute emphasized, “When someone commits mortgage fraud, they undermine the faith and integrity of our system. We’ve sent a criminal referral to the Department of Justice concerning Ms. Cook. The DOJ should investigate the facts thoroughly.”

Sen. Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts responded to Trump’s remarks on social media, asserting that “President Trump cannot illegally fire independent Federal Reserve board members. It’s clear they’re looking for scapegoats for their failures in managing America’s costs.”

Trump has publicly criticized the Federal Reserve and its chair, Jerome Powell, for not lowering interest rates. Despite Trump’s threats, Powell has stated he would not resign if asked.

Interestingly, Trump’s influence over the Fed’s direction could be stronger if Cook were to resign, allowing him to appoint a successor closer to his policy preferences.

Cook, notably the first Black woman to hold the position of Federal Reserve Governor, was appointed by former President Joe Biden in 2022.

Responding to the allegations on Wednesday, Cook stated, “I learned from the media that FHFA Director William Plute made criminal referrals based on a mortgage application from prior to my time at the Federal Reserve.” She also emphasized her commitment to upholding her financial integrity and dismissed the idea of resigning due to what she termed questionable tweets.
