Trump states he will prevent the US-Canada bridge unless Canada engages in trade discussions.

On Monday, President Donald Trump issued a warning about blocking a bridge that connects Michigan and Canada unless Canada engages in discussions with the U.S. regarding tariffs and the exclusion of American products.

In a detailed post on Truth Social, Trump criticized Canada for allegedly exploiting the United States through unfair trade practices and favoring China.

To pressure Canada into negotiations, he mentioned he would prevent the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which honors the famous Canadian hockey player who played for the Detroit Red Wings.

This bridge, which is still under construction, is meant to link Detroit with Windsor, Ontario.

Trump stated, “I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given, and importantly, until Canada treats the United States with the fairness and respect we deserve.”

He added, “We will start negotiations immediately. With everything we gave them, we will probably own at least half of this asset.”

He pointed out the removal of U.S. alcoholic beverages from Ontario’s liquor store shelves as one example of the imbalances in trade.

Trump has previously expressed concerns about Canada benefiting from U.S. trade policies.

In his statement, he claimed that Canada is constructing the bridge with “virtually no American content.”

He further criticized former President Barack Obama for allowing Canada to bypass the Buy American Act, which mandates that federal agencies procure materials made in the U.S. and primarily from American components.

Trump alleged that Canada has not utilized American products, including steel.

He expressed frustration, stating, “Now the Canadian government expects, as president of the United States, to allow them to simply ‘take advantage of America.’ What does the United States have to gain – absolutely nothing!”

He also mentioned that Ontario doesn’t stock American alcoholic products, calling it “an absolute no-no.” Additionally, he expressed concern over Premier Carney’s efforts to negotiate with China, fearing that Canada would suffer as a result.

Trump argued that by catering to China, Canada could jeopardize its national sport, ice hockey, suggesting that “the first thing China will do is cancel all ice hockey in Canada and permanently abolish the Stanley Cup.”

Fox News Digital made an inquiry to the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C.
