Trump Critiques Bill Maher in Truth Social Post
In a lengthy post on Truth Social this past Saturday, former President Donald Trump labeled liberal comedian Bill Maher an “idiot” and a “highly overrated lightweight.” Maher is known for regularly criticizing both Trump and the political left. In his message, Trump suggested that Maher is suffering from “severe Trump derangement syndrome” and urged Republicans to cease their admiration for Maher, whom he dismissed as someone “frequently” attacking the left.
Trump referenced a dinner with Maher in spring 2025 at the White House, which he deemed a “total waste of time.” He claimed, “Bill Maher is a hugely overrated lightweight, and the Republican Party needs to stop using him to showcase how the left is coming at us. Our greatest base in history will laugh at your weakness for doing that!” He insisted that Maher is still grappling with TDS, humorously stating, “There is nothing that can be done to cure this very serious illness.”
The former president recounted the dining experience, mentioning that Maher had expressed nervousness and immediately ordered a “vodka tonic.” Trump described Maher as “actually scared,” and added that this vulnerability was oddly endearing. He commented that their dinner had been pleasant and that Maher had shown respect regarding their meeting, but questioned why Maher wouldn’t acknowledge Trump’s efforts to improve the country since their dinner.
Trump expressed frustration that Maher’s show resumed its typical anti-Trump narrative without recognizing various accomplishments from his presidency. He listed achievements like low crime rates and economic milestones, questioning why Maher didn’t address these topics in his commentary.
The president’s irritation escalated after Maher ridiculed comments Trump made on his Truth Social show regarding Canada and a joke about ice hockey. Trump clarified that he intended the remark humorously and not to be taken literally. He dismissed Maher’s critique, noting, “Fortunately, his TV ratings are so low that no one will ever know about his various fake news statements about me.”
Trump revealed that Maher invited him to another dinner at the White House, which he chose not to attend, stating, “I’d rather spend my time making America great again than wasting it on him.” He ended his post with a nod to his followers, thanking them for their attention to the matter.
While no immediate responses came from either the White House or Maher’s show, Maher has a history of being a vocal opponent of the far left, though he has also supported the Democratic Party in various instances. During a recent episode, Maher took several jabs at Trump and his supporters, highlighting the struggles faced by conservative Americans.
