Trump states Houthis no longer wish to engage in conflict, cancels airstrikes

Trump says Houthis don’t want to fight anymore, calls off airstrikes

Trump Announces Halt in Strikes Against Houthis

On Tuesday, President Trump shared that the Houthis indicated a desire to end hostilities, leading to the cancellation of planned strikes against the rebel groups.

“We had some really encouraging news last night. The Houthis informed us that they don’t want to continue fighting. They simply want peace, and we appreciate that,” he said.

“They’ve surrendered, and I think it’s crucial to trust what they say. They assured us they would cease targeting ships,” he noted.

“I believe their word, and we’ll soon halt the effective bombing of the Houthis,” Trump added.

Alongside the president was Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who emphasized that the campaign in Yemen against the Houthis was primarily about “freedom of navigation.” He reiterated that the strikes were being stopped.

“A group with advanced weapons was endangering global transport, and if they can stop, we certainly can. So, this is a significant development,” Rubio mentioned.

The Houthi rebels had been targeting shipping routes in the Red Sea, prompting ongoing US military strikes against them, which began in March.
